Indonesian educators advocate for family involvement to prevent digital violence
The Association of Education and Teachers (P2G) is calling for strengthened family education to protect children from exposure to digital violence. Iman Zanatul Haeri, P2G Head of Teacher Advocacy, emphasized that preventing such exposure requires a coordinated effort between the government, parents, schools, and the community.
Haeri noted that schools can only provide limited protection, as children spend a maximum of eight hours in a school environment. Consequently, parents must play a more active role in monitoring digital media usage and understanding the risks of digital violence. He suggested that the government should bolster family education through programs involving local community organizations like Posyandu and PKK, as well as dedicated parenting classes.
Additionally, experts warn that parenting styles significantly impact child development. Overly controlling behavior, where parents attempt to manage every aspect of a child's life or restrict their freedom excessively, can lead to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and loneliness. Effective protection requires a balance of guidance and communication between schools and families.
