Farmer Hasim Lembesi killed by a giant python on Indonesia’s Sula Island

Hasim Lembesi, a 35‑40‑year‑old farmer, disappeared on the night of 27 July 2026 while walking home through forested terrain on Sula Island in North Maluku, Indonesia. Villagers and police later found a seven‑metre reticulated python with an unusually swollen abdomen along his route. The snake was killed, opened and its stomach contained Lembesi’s body, which was recovered at about 20:30 local time.

Police spokesperson Jaya Afandi M. Soamole confirmed the discovery, arranged for the remains to be taken to the village of Waisakai for burial preparations and warned residents to travel in pairs when moving through the forest. Fatal python attacks on people are extremely rare but have been recorded in rural Indonesia.
