Indonesian farmers repurpose coffee waste for energy and feed

Agricultural communities in Indonesia are adopting circular economy practices by repurposing coffee husk waste into valuable secondary products.

In Karawang, a community service team from Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang (UNSIKA) trained coffee farmers in Medalsari to convert coffee husk waste into biomass briquettes. This initiative aims to provide an eco-friendly alternative energy source and create new income streams for farmers while reducing environmental pollution. The program focuses on downstreaming appropriate technology to support economic and energy independence.

In Bali, Arabica coffee farmers in Kintamani are implementing zero-waste concepts by transforming coffee husks into livestock feed and organic fertilizer. Led by researchers from Universitas Warmadewa, the program also introduces coating technology to maintain bean quality during storage and provides training on global food safety standards, including Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP).
