Indonesian film industry faces projected viewership decline in 2026

Director Angga Dwimas Sasongko predicts that Indonesian film viewership will decline by approximately 12 to 17 percent in 2026 compared to the previous year. Sasongko, founder of Visinema, described this trend as an “alarm warning” for the national film industry, urging stakeholders to move beyond relying solely on the country's large population and instead focus on long-term infrastructure and strategic planning.

In response to industry developments, the Ministry of Culture is supporting initiatives like the 6th Jakarta Film Week, held from October 21 to 25, 2026. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon highlighted the festival as a vital tool for building the Indonesian film ecosystem and expanding international networks for local filmmakers. The 2026 festival featured 159 films from 59 countries, including participants from the United States, France, Italy, Hong Kong, Japan, and Peru.
