Indonesian food and tobacco industries seek regulatory certainty

Stakeholders in Indonesia's food, beverage, and tobacco industries are calling for regulatory certainty and adequate transition periods following the implementation of Government Regulation (PP) Number 28 of 2024 regarding health. During a forum organized by the Federation of Tobacco, Food and Beverage Workers Unions (FSP RTMM-SPSI), industry representatives, academics, and government officials discussed the challenges posed by new mandates, particularly those concerning sugar, salt, and fat content in food products.

Joko Baroto of the Indonesian Employers Association (APINDO) noted that companies require time to adjust product compositions, production processes, technology, and workforce competencies. He warned that these regulatory shifts could impact the entire supply chain, including raw material suppliers, distributors, farmers, and laborers.

The Indonesian Food and Beverage Association (GAPMI) emphasized the necessity of evidence-based policy, arguing that public health objectives must be balanced with thorough assessments of the economic impact on business activities and supply chains.
