Indonesian Football Faces Fan Violence Crisis, Calls for Stronger PSSI Sanctions

Supporter riots have repeatedly disrupted Indonesian football matches, leading to heavy penalties for clubs such as Persela Lamongan, Persipura Jayapura and recent incidents involving PSM Makassar and Persib Bandung. The PSSI disciplinary committee has imposed bans on spectators and multi‑million‑rupiah fines, but analysts argue the punishments are insufficient to deter repeat offenses and have caused significant financial losses for the clubs.

The House of Representatives (DPR) has publicly demanded a total evaluation of the PSSI’s governance, tighter security measures at stadiums, and harsher sanctions for clubs whose supporters cause disturbances. DPR members emphasized that the unrest threatens the national image of Indonesian football and called for stronger fan education programs to change the prevailing culture of intolerance toward defeat.
