Indonesian lawmaker urges national ban on ‘sound horeg’ after three deaths

Eka Widodo, a member of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), is urging the national government to implement a nationwide ban on ‘sound horeg’ activities. This call follows incidents in East Java during August 2026 that resulted in the deaths of at least three citizens.

Widodo requested that the Ministry of Home Affairs issue orders to local governments to prohibit these high-decibel loudspeaker activities to ensure public safety and order. He emphasized that while entertainment is permissible, it must not infringe upon the rights of others or pose threats to community safety.

In response to the fatalities, the East Java Provincial Government is reviewing existing regulations. A joint circular issued in August 2025 by the Governor, Regional Police Chief, and Pangdam V/Brawijaya previously established rules regarding noise levels, transport vehicles, routes, and permits. East Java Regional Secretary Adhy Karyono stated that the provincial government will consolidate with stakeholders and local leadership coordination forums to evaluate and enforce these provisions.
