Indonesian lawmakers emphasize ethics in parliament and digital spaces

Indonesian lawmakers are emphasizing the importance of ethics in both parliamentary conduct and digital discourse to maintain public trust in democratic institutions.

Agung Widyantoro, Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Ethics Council (MKD), stated that the dignity of parliament is built upon the daily behavior of its members. He noted that as representatives of people's sovereignty, lawmakers must adhere to ethical values in their personal and professional lives. Widyantoro warned that failing to attend meetings or neglecting the interests of electoral districts could diminish public confidence.

In a separate discussion regarding digital spaces, Commission I member Andina Thresia Narang highlighted that while freedom of expression is vital for democracy, it must be exercised with responsibility. She urged the public to use digital platforms for constructive dialogue and fact-based criticism rather than personal attacks or insults, arguing that politeness and critical thinking can coexist.
