Indonesian lawmakers urge MUI to issue fatwa against vape use

Indonesian legislators are calling on the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to issue a fatwa declaring vaping prohibited (haram). The push follows concerns from the National Police Chief regarding the misuse of electronic cigarettes as a medium for consuming liquid narcotics.

Ahmad Sahroni, Vice Chairman of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR), stated that the MUI should act due to the health risks and the potential for drug abuse. He noted that while the move might face opposition from industry stakeholders, the social harm outweighs the economic impact. He also suggested that the police and relevant authorities develop an exit strategy for the vape industry to research safer alternatives.

Similarly, Yahya Zaini, Vice Chairman of Commission IX of the DPR, expressed support for a fatwa specifically targeting vapes containing liquid narcotics. He urged the National Police to investigate manufacturers found using illegal substances and called on the Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) to tighten oversight and regulations to protect public health.
