Indonesian lawmakers urge national disaster status for forest fires

Members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) are calling for forest and land fires (karhutla) to be declared a national disaster to accelerate emergency response and resource mobilization. Legislators argue that the current scale of the crisis, which impacts public health, education, and the environment, requires a more robust state response than routine annual handling.

Law enforcement is also under scrutiny. Following the designation of 13 corporations as suspects by the National Police, lawmakers are demanding more than just administrative sanctions or fines. They are urging the government to revoke business licenses and seize assets of companies proven to be involved in illegal land clearing.

Additionally, the DPR has questioned the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK) regarding the Unqualified Opinion (WTP) granted to the Ministry of Forestry. This inquiry follows reports of potential state losses amounting to Rp 104.43 trillion due to mining activities conducted in forest areas without proper permits.
