Indonesian local governments expand social security for vulnerable workers

Local governments in Indonesia are expanding social security coverage for vulnerable workers through regional budget (APBD) allocations.

In Kudus, the regency government has provided BPJS Ketenagakerjaan protection to 30,344 vulnerable workers. To date, 185 participants have received benefits, including death benefits, medical treatment for work accidents, and scholarships for children of workers who suffered workplace accidents. The local government aims to continue expanding coverage toward Universal Coverage Jamsostek (UCJ).

In Makassar, the city government’s ‘Makassar Berjasa’ initiative has registered approximately 81,000 vulnerable workers for work accident and death benefits. Additionally, about 45,000 workers are covered by three programs: work accident insurance, death benefits, and old-age security (JHT). The Makassar government targets adding protection for another 22,000 workers using regional funds.
