Indonesian Minister calls for economic mapping of music sector

Indonesian Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has requested the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) to map the economic contribution of the cultural sector, specifically focusing on the music industry. Speaking at the Indonesia Music Conference in Makassar, Zon highlighted the global growth of the music industry, noting that global recorded music revenue reached $31.7 billion in 2025.

Zon emphasized the importance of digital transformation, noting that streaming services account for 69.6 percent of global recorded music revenue. In Indonesia, Spotify data from 2025 shows that Indonesian musicians' works were discovered over 6.3 billion times, with royalties increasing by more than 16 percent compared to the previous year. Notably, approximately 60 percent of these royalties originated from international listeners in countries such as the United States, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom.

Additionally, Candra Darusman, Chairman of the Anugerah Musik Indonesia (AMI) Foundation, noted that the AMI Awards have provided recognition for diverse musical genres for nearly 29 years. He stated that the awards aim to embrace various generations and genres to record the evolution of Indonesian music over time.
