Indonesian Minister Fadli Zon promotes cultural diplomacy
Indonesian Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has emphasized the strategic role of cinema and international cooperation in advancing the nation's cultural diplomacy. Speaking at the opening of Jakarta Film Week 2026, Zon noted that Indonesia's vast diversity—comprising over 1,300 ethnic groups and 718 regional languages—serves as a profound source of inspiration for authentic storytelling that can resonate with global audiences.
Zon highlighted that film acts as a medium to transcend geographic and linguistic barriers, helping to introduce Indonesian history, traditions, and contemporary expressions to the world. He expressed a vision for Indonesian cinema to gain broader international recognition while maintaining creative independence and cultural authenticity.
In a separate effort to strengthen bilateral ties, Zon proposed cultural cooperation with Suriname to preserve the identity of the Indonesian diaspora. Proposed initiatives include joint UNESCO World Heritage nominations, such as Jaranan or Javanese script, and the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on culture. He also suggested activating the Indonesian Cultural House in Suriname to ensure the continuous preservation and promotion of Indonesian heritage.
