Indonesia to repurpose Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi

The Indonesian government has accepted the grant of the Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi, valued at 54 million euros, to bolster national defense and humanitarian capabilities. Following a mandate from President Prabowo Subianto, the Ministry of Defense plans to modify the vessel to serve as a platform for helicopters and drones to assist in combating forest and land fires, particularly in archipelagic and Kalimantan regions.

Modifications will include expanding healthcare facilities, upgrading air conditioning systems for tropical climates, and enhancing cargo capacity for logistical support and evacuations. The vessel, which may be renamed KRI Sriwijaya, is expected to arrive at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta following an escort by Italian warships through international waters and Indonesian Navy frigates upon entering Indonesian maritime territory.

The carrier is scheduled to make its debut during a naval parade in Jakarta Bay on October 4, 2026, as part of the Indonesian Military (TNI) 81st anniversary celebrations. The parade will feature 102 warships and will serve as a viewing platform for President Subianto and other state guests.
