Indonesian officials clarify purpose of Academic Ability Test
Officials in Indonesia are clarifying the purpose of the Academic Ability Test (TKA) for elementary school students, emphasizing that it is a tool for quality mapping rather than a high-stakes exam.
Banyumas Regent Sadewo Tri Lastiono stated that the TKA serves as a strategic instrument to evaluate basic student abilities and improve the learning process, specifically focusing on literacy, numeracy, and reasoning. He urged educators and parents to view the results as a way to map educational quality without suppressing the unique potential of individual children.
Meanwhile, the National Education Board has advised parents against forcing children to attend extra tutoring centers (bimbel) to prepare for the TKA. Chairman Suyanto noted that the test is not a requirement for graduation and should not be viewed as a determinant of a student's entire future. He emphasized that while tutoring is a legal professional service, the primary role of parents should be to act as learning partners by providing motivation and discussing lessons at home.
