Indonesian officials warn of health risks and narcotics potential in vaping
Medical experts and law enforcement officials in Indonesia are raising alarms regarding the health risks and potential for drug abuse associated with electronic cigarettes (vapes). Professor Tjandra Yoga Aditama, Chairman of the Honor Council of the Indonesian Lung Physicians Association (PDPI), warned that vaping can lead to e-cigarette or vaping associated lung injury (EVALI), as identified by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Citing World Health Organization (WHO) data, Prof. Tjandra noted that vapes contain nicotine, toxic substances, and flavorings that can cause cardiovascular issues, fetal impairment, and developmental problems in children and adolescents. He also noted that the addition of narcotics, such as etomidate, significantly increases health risks.
On the security front, Indonesian National Police Chief General Suyudi Ario Seto has advocated for a total ban on vapes in Indonesia, arguing they serve as a gateway for liquid narcotics. This stance follows the seizure of 1.16 tons of ketamine HCl in North Sumatra. General Seto praised the North Sumatra provincial government for implementing a ban on vaping among civil servants (ASN), noting it as a proactive measure against the evolution of narcotics from solid to liquid forms.
