Puan Maharani clarifies election threshold proposals are informal
Speaker of the House Puan Maharani has clarified that discussions regarding changes to election thresholds remain informal and have not yet reached official deliberation within the House of Representatives (DPR RI). The proposals currently being debated among political parties include raising the parliamentary threshold to 5–7 percent and requiring presidential candidates to be supported by at least two political parties in parliament.
Various political parties have expressed differing stances on the matter. Gerindra has indicated agreement with a 5 percent parliamentary threshold, while NasDem has proposed a 7 percent threshold to increase democratic effectiveness. Conversely, PAN has expressed concerns that raising the threshold above 4 percent might conflict with Constitutional Court rulings.
Political observer Hendri Satrio has cautioned that the debate should not focus solely on the percentage figures, but also on mechanisms to ensure that votes cast for parties that fail to meet the threshold are not wasted and remain representative of the public will.
