Indonesian prisons implement food security programs through inmate farming

Correctional institutions in Indonesia are implementing food security and vocational training programs through inmate-led agricultural and livestock activities.

In Bengkalis, the Class IIA Bengkalis Correctional Institution recently harvested 150 kilograms of water spinach (kangkung) cultivated by inmates. This initiative, part of the Work Guidance program, aims to support national food security goals and provide inmates with practical skills for reintegration into society. The harvest was distributed to a partner named Bama.

Similarly, the Class IIA Sidoarjo Correctional Institution is managing an Elba village chicken farm to produce eggs. The facility currently maintains 41 laying hens, yielding an average of 20 to 30 eggs daily. This program focuses on teaching inmates responsibility and livestock management, including feeding, maintenance, and hygiene, to prepare them for productive roles after their sentences are completed.
