Indonesian regional authorities provide free rabies vaccinations

Local government agencies in Trenggalek and Mimika, Indonesia, have launched free rabies vaccination programs for pets, including dogs, cats, and monkeys, to commemorate World Rabies Day.

In Trenggalek, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries allocated 100 vaccine doses. Forty doses were distributed to the Rejowinangun Animal Health Center, while the remainder was provided to independent veterinary practitioners. Officials noted that while East Java is currently rabies-free, continuous vaccination is necessary to maintain this status.

In Mimika, Papua Tengah, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health prepared approximately 700 doses. In addition to mass vaccinations at the department office, animal health teams are being deployed to various districts to expand service reach. Authorities in Mimika are also working with quarantine agencies to tighten supervision of animal traffic through sea and air ports to prevent the virus from entering the region.
