Indonesian regions intensify flood mitigation efforts
Local governments in Indonesia are intensifying flood mitigation efforts ahead of the upcoming rainy season. In Makassar, the Public Works Department has deployed approximately 150 drainage task force personnel to normalize drainage channels and dredge canals, specifically targeting flood-prone areas like the Paccerakkang sub-district. Efforts include cleaning debris-clogged channels and repairing roadside drainage to ensure optimal water flow.
Similarly, the Demak Regency government is prioritizing river normalization, the reinforcement of critical embankments, and the maintenance of water gates. Demak officials noted that flooding in the region is often caused by breached river embankments rather than just extreme rainfall. These infrastructure projects are being implemented in stages through 2026, with budget priorities determined by regional vulnerability, population exposure, and potential economic loss.
