Indonesian rupiah faces volatility near 18,000 mark
The Indonesian rupiah has experienced significant volatility, briefly breaching the 18,000 per US dollar level. In response, Bank Indonesia has implemented consistent interventions through spot, Non-Deliverable Forward (NDF), and Domestic Non-Deliverable Forward (DNDF) markets to maintain exchange rate stability.
Recent fluctuations have been influenced by several factors. A decline in global oil prices, driven by the resumption of Saudi Arabian crude exports via the East-West pipeline, provided some support for the rupiah. However, external pressures such as high US bond yields and a strong US dollar continue to impact the currency. Bank Indonesia officials have emphasized that future decisions regarding the benchmark interest rate will remain data-dependent.
Simultaneously, the Indonesian stock market faced downward pressure as the Indonesia Stock Exchange introduced a new rule lowering the minimum share price from 50 rupiah to 1 rupiah. This reform, intended to improve liquidity and price discovery, contributed to the Jakarta Composite Index dropping as much as 2.2%. HSBC has projected that the rupiah could trade between Rp 15,800 and Rp 16,000 per US dollar by the end of 2026, citing broader US dollar strength rather than specific domestic weakness.
