Indonesia economy faces Rupiah volatility and new BEI short selling rules

Indonesia's economic landscape is experiencing significant shifts across currency, stock markets, and regulatory frameworks. The Rupiah has faced downward pressure, with analysts predicting it could reach the Rp 18,050 per USD level due to global geopolitical tensions, specifically the escalating conflict between the US and Iran which has driven up oil prices.

In the capital markets, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) has officially implemented Short Selling and Intraday Short Selling (IDSS) mechanisms as of October 1, 2026. This phased rollout currently applies to five highly liquid stocks: ASII, BBCA, BRPT, BUMI, and INDF, with initial licenses granted to PT Ajaib Sekuritas Asia and PT Semesta Indovest Sekuritas. Meanwhile, the IHSG stock index has shown volatility, testing the 6,000 psychological level amid concerns over inflation and foreign investor sell-offs.

On the macroeconomic front, Indonesia's manufacturing PMI returned to expansion territory in September 2026 at 52.4, following a contraction in August. Additionally, the country recorded a trade surplus of USD 3.55 billion in August. In the banking sector, major institutions including Bank Mandiri, BRI, and BNI have updated minimum balance requirements for various savings products effective October 2026. Separately, the OJK confirmed it has not yet received a formal application regarding Danantara's plan to acquire a 5% to 10% stake in the BEI.
