Indonesian state enterprises drive UMKM growth toward global markets
Indonesian state-owned enterprises (BUMN) are implementing comprehensive empowerment programs to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) scale up and access global markets. These initiatives focus on combining financial capital with business development, such as branding, packaging, and marketing assistance.
In West Java, palm sugar producers from Garut, specifically the ‘Gasebu’ brand, have attracted export interest from Cianjur, with requests reaching up to 30 tons. This growth was supported by PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM), which provides both financing and empowerment to help ultra-micro businesses overcome limitations in production systems and promotion.
Other major state entities are also driving similar efforts. PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) operates ‘Rumah BUMN’ across 54 regions in Indonesia to provide coaching and networking opportunities. Additionally, PT Pertamina has mentored at least 66,000 UMKM, facilitating their participation in major trade exhibitions like Food & Hospitality Indonesia to connect them with international buyers.
