Indonesian students compete in 2026 national science and research olympiads

Indonesia held two major national student competitions in September 2026: the National Science Olympiad (OSN) for high school students and the Indonesian Student Research Olympiad (OPSI).

The OSN high school competition, organized by the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas), concluded at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang with 566 finalists. DKI Jakarta emerged as the overall champion with 82 medals. SMAS 1 Kristen BPK Penabur Jakarta earned the highest number of gold medals with five, followed by SMAS Kristen BPK Penabur Gading Serpong with four gold medals.

Separately, the National OPSI 2026 opened at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta. Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, emphasized that the competition should foster a scientific culture and research mindset among students. He encouraged the integration of arts and sports into STEM to create a STEAM framework and urged students to use technology and artificial intelligence critically to solve real-world problems, such as climate change and food security.
