Indonesian Villages Rebuild or Replace Critical Bridges After Collapse

In the Maluku province of Indonesia, residents of the villages Kilbon Kway and Kilmury rallied together to construct a new bridge over the Ar Rabu River after the previous structure became unsafe. The community‑built bridge restores the sole land route used for school attendance, health services, agricultural transport and daily travel, and was completed without awaiting government assistance.

Meanwhile, in Bengkulu Tengah, a hanging bridge linking the settlement of Rindu Hati to surrounding farms and rice fields collapsed on 28 July 2026, likely due to corroded suspension cables on a structure nearing 30 years old. No injuries were reported, but the failure cut off access to hundreds of hectares of farmland. Villagers manually carried a motorbike across the river while seeking replacement of the bridge.

Both incidents highlight the reliance of remote Indonesian communities on local bridge infrastructure and their proactive efforts to maintain vital connections for livelihoods and essential services.
