Indonesian Master Painter Nasirun Dies at 60, Funeral Held in Imogiri

Nasirun, a leading figure in contemporary Indonesian visual art, was born on 1 October 1965 in Cilacap and spent most of his career in Yogyakarta. On 1 August 2026 he suffered severe shortness of breath, was taken to AMC Muhammadiyah Hospital in Yogyakarta, and died of cardiac arrest at about 05:50 WIB. He had a hidden history of pneumonia and acid‑reflux disease, which his close friend Alfi disclosed after his death.

His body was laid to rest at the Giri Sapto Artists’ Cemetery in Imogiri, Bantul, with the burial ceremony at 14:00 WIB. Hundreds of family members, fellow artists, and cultural figures attended, offering flowers and prayers. The art community remembered him for his expressionist style, works ranging from paintings and sculptures to installations that drew on Javanese mythology and social satire. Musician Kunto Aji also posted a tribute, highlighting Nasirun’s influence beyond visual arts.
