Indonesia launches 25 new hospital-based specialist doctor programs
The Indonesian government has officially issued operational permits for 25 new hospital-based specialist doctor education programs (PPDS). These programs will be conducted at Primary Teaching Hospitals (RSPPU) as part of a strategic effort to address the nation's medical specialist shortage.
Presidential Chief of Staff Dudung Abdurachman stated that the initiative follows directives from President Prabowo Subianto to combat a shortage of 268,073 medical specialists. The government aims to urgently distribute an additional 55,712 specialists across 481 districts and cities, with a particular focus on remote, outermost, and disadvantaged (3T) regions and island areas.
This hospital-based scheme complements the 160 university-based programs approved earlier in February 2026. While university-based programs focus on academic foundations, the hospital-based model emphasizes clinical competence and service orientation, offering students guaranteed job placements and comprehensive financial support, including full scholarships from LPDP.
