Indonesia's Independence Day Zikir Prayer Draws Over 100,000 at Monas

On 1 August 2026, Jakarta’s Monumen Nasional (Monas) hosted the Zikir dan Doa Kebangsaan, the opening ceremony of the 81st Independence Day celebrations. The event attracted more than 100 000 participants from across the country and featured inter‑faith prayers led by six religious leaders, a recitation of the Qur’an by Muhammad Zian Fahrezi, and Selawat Kebangsaan performed by Habib Syech bin Abdul Qodir Assegaf. Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar addressed the crowd, emphasizing unity, harmony and gratitude for the nation’s independence.

Security was coordinated by Polda Metro Jaya, deploying 1 263 combined police, TNI and local officials to ensure safety. President‑elect Prabowo Subianto did not attend due to other state duties, a fact noted by the Minister of Religious Affairs. Minor incidents were reported, including a journalist’s mobile phone being stolen during the crowd. The gathering was part of a broader schedule of 47 major activities in Jakarta on the same day, ranging from sports matches to auto shows, all overseen by police and emergency services.

The ceremony highlighted Indonesia’s religious diversity, with participants from Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism joining together in prayer for peace, prosperity and national unity.
