Indonesia's BNPT and Immigration Ministry Boost Former Terrorists' Livelihoods in West Java
The National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT) partnered with the Ministry of Immigration and Prisons, police anti‑terror unit Densus 88, and PT Sang Hyang Seri to launch an economic‑empowerment program for former terrorism inmates (napiter) in Sukamandi, Subang, West Java. The initiative moves deradicalisation beyond ideological counselling, supporting participants to start productive farms, livestock and fish‑pond businesses under a circular‑farming model.
Eddy Hartono, BNPT chief, said the programme “continues deradicalisation through social reintegration by developing entrepreneurship so former inmates can become productive and accepted by society.” Minister Agus Andrianto highlighted Sukamandi’s potential as a hub for food‑security training and open‑prison work centres. The first harvest from the pilot project was harvested on 31 July, demonstrating the model’s viability and its contribution to national food‑security goals.
The collaboration aims to provide sustainable livelihoods, reduce recidivism risk and showcase a replicable model for other regions.
