Indonesia's BPJPH Sets Mandatory Halal Certification for Oct 2026 to Boost Competitiveness

The Halal Assurance Agency (BPJPH) announced that mandatory halal certification – known as “Wajib Halal” – will take effect on 18 October 2026. The requirement, codified in Government Regulation No. 42/2024, applies to a wide range of products including food and beverage, meat, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and genetically‑engineered items.

BPJPH head Ahmad Haikal Hasan told journalists in Jakarta that the certification should be seen as an investment rather than a simple duty. He said, “Halal bukan sekadar kewajiban, melainkan transparansi, traceability, dan trustability,” emphasizing that halal status can enhance product quality, hygiene, health standards and consumer trust, thereby expanding market access and strengthening the competitiveness of Indonesian businesses. Firms are urged to begin preparations now to meet the upcoming deadline.
