Indonesia's BPOM cracks down on illegal cosmetics worth Rp35.8bn

The Food and Drug Authority of Indonesia (BPOM) intensified oversight of cosmetics from 11‑22 May 2026, inspecting 190 production and distribution sites and online platforms. Inspectors identified 2 205 items (2 127 765 pieces) of illegal cosmetics valued at approximately Rp35.8 billion. About 86.8 % of the finds lacked a distribution permit, and over 90 % were imported, chiefly from China. The largest concentrations were in Tangerang (Rp27.6 bn), Bogor (Rp4.6 bn) and Jakarta (Rp2.3 bn). BPOM ordered withdrawals, destruction, temporary suspensions, licence revocations and recommended takedown of offending e‑commerce links.

A separate operation uncovered 890 items (1 818 245 pieces) of illegal cosmetics and 66 items (263 794 pieces) of illegal Chinese imports, together worth roughly Rp27.6 billion. Brands such as Lameila, SVMY and others were found in a Tangerang warehouse. The agency halted activity at the site, seized the products and began laboratory testing for hazardous ingredients. BPOM emphasized the need for stronger consumer protection as online sales of imported cosmetics continue to grow.
