Indonesia's BRIN Identifies New Shrimp Goby Species in Banyuwangi Waters

Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has described a new species of shrimpgoby, Tomiyamichthys oriens, from the shallow, sandy coastal waters of Banyuwangi in East Java. The discovery, led by researcher Kunto Wibowo of the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, is based on two specimens and notes distinctive orange side markings, a unique dorsal fin filament in males, and specific fin ray counts that separate it from its Japanese relative Tomiyamichthys hyacinthinus.

The finding raises the known count of Tomiyamichthys species to 21 and highlights the still‑under‑documented marine biodiversity of Indonesia, which lies at the center of the Coral Triangle. Researchers hope the new species will spur further exploration of Indonesia's coral reef fauna and underscore the importance of conserving its rich, yet vulnerable, marine habitats.
