Prabowo Subianto proposes free state education from elementary to university
President Prabowo Subianto has announced a plan to provide free education across all state-run levels, including elementary, middle, high school, and state universities. The administration aims to ensure equitable access for all Indonesian children regardless of their economic background. To support this, the government is planning a limited meeting (ratas) to discuss the policy's implementation.
Government officials, including Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Prof. Brian Yuliarto, are currently analyzing the feasibility of the program. Initial estimates suggest the funding requirement could reach approximately Rp93.7 trillion. The Ministry is also exploring potential collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Danantara to manage the costs.
Legislative responses have been mixed. DPR Speaker Puan Maharani emphasized the need for a precise study of the state budget (APBN) and global economic stability to prevent fiscal strain. Meanwhile, other lawmakers have raised concerns regarding teacher welfare, the transition of part-time teachers to full-time status, and the urgent need to repair damaged educational infrastructure, noting that a significant portion of the nation's classrooms are currently in disrepair.
