Indonesia's DPD and DPR Agree to Advance Island Regions Bill

The Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD) welcomed the commitment of the House of Representatives (DPR) to move forward with the Island Regions Bill, an initiative aimed at addressing development challenges in the country's archipelagic areas. In a tripartite working meeting with the DPR's special committee and the government on 25 June 2026, all DPR factions approved the bill for further discussion, targeting completion within three legislative sessions, preferably two.

DPD Senator Andi Sofyan Hasdam said the agreement reflects growing consensus on the need for affirmative policies to improve connectivity, transport costs, public services, and fiscal capacity in island regions. He emphasized that the legislation will provide tailored financing and infrastructure support to promote equitable development across Indonesia's many islands. Deputy team leader R. Graal Taliawo added that the bill affirms Indonesia’s identity as a maritime nation and seeks to deliver justice and balanced growth for island communities.
