Indonesia's EV Market Expands as Toyota Rules Out Hilux PHEV

Toyota confirmed it has no plans to launch a plug‑in hybrid version of its Hilux pickup, saying the company will continue focusing on conventional hybrids and battery‑electric models for the Indonesian market. At the same time, a growing range of fully electric vehicles—including the Hyundai Ioniq 5, BYD Seal, Kia EV5 and Xpeng G6—are now priced between roughly Rp600 million and Rp700 million, matching the cost of a Toyota Fortuner SUV.

Other automotive stories that attracted readers this week were a McLaren 720 S crash that split the supercar in two but left the driver unharmed, Jakarta's ongoing vehicle‑tax‑waiver programme, criticism of Malaysia's prime minister for using a luxury BMW, and the start of local production of the Jetour T1 SUV, with hybrid variants expected to dominate output.

These developments highlight the rapid diversification of vehicle options and policy discussions in Indonesia and the broader region.
