Indonesia's Fishermen Face Port Siltation and Extreme Weather Challenges
Fishermen in West Java's Indramayu district are protesting severe siltation at the Karangsong mouth, which has blocked vessels and delayed cargo unloading. The Gerakan Nelayan Pantura (GNP) leader Kajidin says the problem stems from a broken breakwater that allows continuous sediment buildup, and urges the government to repair the structure permanently.
In the southern coast of Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, extreme winds and rough seas have sharply reduced fish catches. Fisherman Sumardi reports daily hauls dropping from 50‑70 kg to 20‑30 kg per boat, though prices for tongkol remain stable. Local authorities warn of safety risks and anticipate calmer conditions by mid‑September.
