Indonesia's Forestry Ministry advances forest dispute rules and carbon credit scheme

The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) organized a public consultation on a draft regulation outlining procedures for resolving forest disputes. The draft aims to provide legal certainty for both litigation and non‑litigation pathways, clarifying norms, standards, procedures and compensation criteria. Ministry officials highlighted that “the emergence of this regulation is a concrete step to address the complexity of forest issues and to ensure legal certainty through strong technical rules,” adding that expert input will shape the final text.

In a related announcement, Kemenhut said the new national carbon market will enable the issuance of forest carbon credits, supporting Indonesia’s climate commitments. Director General Laksmi Wijayanti said the step “supports Indonesia’s NDC and ensures climate funding benefits both people and forest sustainability.” The first three projects approved under Verra standards – Sumatera Merang Peatland, Katingan Peatland Restoration and Conservation, and The Mayas Project – are expected to generate about 31.66 million tonnes of CO₂e reductions during their verification periods.
