Indonesia's Forestry Ministry expands national nursery network to boost seedling supply

Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry is upgrading its network of 59 tree‑seedling nurseries – nine central and 50 permanent sites – to raise both the quantity and quality of seedlings for reforestation, residential and rural planting. The move follows President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to increase seedling production, with Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni stating, "President Prabowo Subianto delivered a very specific message to our ministry. He instructed me to produce more seedlings so that our environment becomes greener, our natural ecosystems are better preserved, and our forests remain protected."

The ministry will remap nursery locations, add new facilities where needed, and introduce advanced nursery technologies to improve survival rates after planting. A new nursery is slated for inauguration in South Sumatra Province. Central nurseries can each produce over five million seedlings annually, while permanent nurseries generate roughly 500,000 to one million seedlings per year, ensuring broader public access and distribution to high‑demand regions.
