Indonesia's Higher Education System Faces Salary Details and Ecosystem Challenges

The Indonesian government has released the projected 2026 remuneration framework for public university lecturers (PNS). The scheme outlines a basic salary complemented by functional‑position allowances, performance bonuses, family and rice subsidies, and other benefits. Salary levels will be influenced by academic rank, qualifications, years of service, performance outcomes, and placement in remote areas.

At the same time, analysts warn that Indonesia's higher‑education ecosystem, despite hosting thousands of public and private institutions across all provinces, shows signs of strain. Recent policies—including the creation of new state universities, changes to university status, reduced reliance on state budgeting, and expanded student intake—have introduced imbalances that could undermine the coordinated growth of the sector.
