Indonesia's KAI records 92% seat occupancy amid 30% school holiday fare discount

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) reported the sale of 1,155,879 discounted tickets for the school‑holiday period of 20 June to 5 July 2026, representing 98.4 % of its total seat capacity of 1,174,624. The 30 % fare reduction, part of a government transport stimulus, was aimed at easing travel costs for families during the holiday break.

During the same period KAI’s Daop 1 Jakarta operation recorded an average economy‑class occupancy of 92 %, with subsidised PSO seats exceeding 100 % due to turn‑over travel, and executive‑class occupancy around 60 %. Of the 308,648 discount‑eligible seats, 207,960 tickets were sold. The busiest departure point was Jakarta’s Pasar Senen station, followed by Yogyakarta. The programme was coordinated with the Ministry of Transportation’s Directorate General of Railways.

KAI officials highlighted that the discount scheme helped maintain high ridership, support environmental goals by shifting commuters to rail, and demonstrated effective inter‑agency collaboration in delivering affordable travel for the public.
