Indonesia's Komdigi denies restricting forest fire content
Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid has denied allegations that the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has requested the removal or restriction of social media content related to forest and land fires (karhutla).
Addressing concerns regarding a potential ‘shadowban’ or content suppression based on platform community guidelines, Hafid emphasized that the government views forest fire information as vital for disaster management. She noted that the government actively promotes such information through official social media channels to facilitate public communication.
Instead of restricting content, Komdigi is calling for greater accountability and algorithmic transparency from social media platforms, including Meta and TikTok. Hafid stated that users have a right to choose the information they consume without unilateral control by technology companies.
Citizens who encounter service disruptions or believe their forest fire-related posts are being restricted are encouraged to file appeals directly with the respective platforms and report the issues to Komdigi.
