Indonesia's KPK indicts Langkat Regent Syah Afandin for multi‑billion rupiah bribery

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Langkat regent Syah Afandin and private businessman Yaqub Abdhal Al Mu’arif as suspects in a bribery scheme linked to procurement projects for the district’s education and housing departments. investigators allege Afandin received fees of 10‑17% of project values, amounting to roughly Rp1.12 billion, and additional gratifications totalling at least Rp3.5 billion tied to appointments and school‑uniform contracts. During a July 2, 2026 operation in Langkat, Binjai and Medan, KPK seized cash, foreign currency worth about Rp1.22 billion, valuables and two bank accounts with a combined balance of Rp2.27 billion. Afandin was detained at the KPK’s Red‑White Building facility, while Yaqub was placed in Medan’s State Detention Center because flight tickets to Jakarta were unavailable. The KPK clarified that logistical constraints, not legal considerations, led to Yaqub’s temporary holding in Medan. Both remain in custody as the investigation proceeds.
