Indonesia's KPK records highest number of regional heads arrested in first half of 2026

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) announced that its anti‑corruption operations in the first semester of 2026 reached a record level, with seven regional leaders detained. The officials include Bupati Pati Sudewo, Wali Kota Madiun Maidi, Bupati Pekalongan Fadia Arafiq, Bupati Rejang Lebong Muhammad Fikri Thobary, Bupati Cilacap Syamsul Auliya Rachman, Bupati Tulungagung Gatut Sunu Wibowo, and Bupati Muara Enim Edison. They are suspected of bribery, gratuities, extortion and conflict‑of‑interest cases, marking a sharp increase from two operations in the same period a year earlier.

Following the arrest of a KPK administrative staff member who became a suspect in a extortion case linked to a regional official, Chairman Setyo Budiyanto ordered a comprehensive review of document security. The agency will restrict access to case files, implement digital tracking of document handling, and ensure only authorized personnel can view sensitive information, aiming to prevent future leaks and maintain procedural integrity.
