Indonesia's Labor Ministry Says Mass Layoffs Have Minimal Impact in Maluku Province

The Provincial Labor and Transmigration Office (Disnakertrans) in Maluku confirmed that mass layoffs (PHK) have not significantly affected the region. Data show that in 2026, 36 companies recorded layoffs affecting 74 workers, largely due to internal issues such as rule violations, misconduct and disciplinary problems, rather than the broader global economic crisis. Lewana Suatrat, the industrial relations mediator, emphasized that "Maluku does not often experience mass layoffs because it is not an industrial area."

At the national level, the government and the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) are drafting about ten preventive measures to curb future layoffs. Apindo’s labor head, Bob Azam, explained that early‑stage company mapping—monitoring indicators like reduced overtime, fewer work days, and consecutive profit declines—will allow authorities to intervene before layoffs become inevitable. The approach aims to protect workers and sustain business activity amid global economic uncertainty.
