Indonesia's Langkat Regent Syah Afandin Charged with Bribery in School Uniform Procurement

Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) announced that Syah Afandin, the elected Regent of Langkat, and his campaign manager Yaqub Abdhal Al Muarif have been named suspects in a bribery and gratification case linked to the procurement of school uniforms and other public‑works contracts. Afandin is alleged to have demanded a 10 % fee on projects awarded to the education department and a 17 % fee on projects for the settlement department, covering roughly 80 contracts worth about Rp 9.5 billion and additional contracts totaling Rp 748 million. KPK said the scheme involved direct‑procurement methods coordinated with officials in the district’s education and settlement agencies. The commission arrested both suspects on 3 July 2026 and placed them in detention for an initial 20‑day period. Afandin is held at the KPK’s Red‑White Building detention centre, while Yaqb is detained at the Medan Police Detention Facility. Both face charges under Indonesia’s anti‑corruption law and relevant provisions of the criminal code.
