Indonesia's Public Transport Ridership Hits Record Growth in 2025
Ridership on Yogyakarta’s Trans Jogja bus system has risen sharply, climbing from 2.13 million passengers in 2022 to an estimated 6.14 million in 2025 – a 187.9 % increase over three years. Daily trips are expected to average about 16,800 in 2025, up from roughly 5,800 in 2022, and December 2025 set a monthly record of 582,130 boardings, representing about 9.5 % of the year’s total.
At the national level, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) reported that 2,953 disabled passengers used its 20 % reduced‑fare tickets in the first half of 2026, a 200 % rise compared with the same period in 2025. The increase pushed the six‑month usage above the entire 2025 total, highlighting growing awareness of and demand for accessible, affordable rail travel. Both trends suggest expanding public‑transport patronage and a push for greater capacity and inclusivity across Indonesia’s urban and inter‑city networks.
