Indonesia's Minister of Religious Affairs links Pancasila to Charter of Medina
Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar has highlighted the alignment between the national ideology of Pancasila and the historical Charter of Medina as a model for managing diversity. Speaking at an international conference, Umar emphasized that Indonesia, as the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation with significant ethnic and religious diversity, serves as a global model for pluralism.
He described the Charter of Medina as an authentic historical milestone in modern civilization, demonstrating how various tribes, races, and religions can coexist under a shared citizenship where minority rights are protected and religious freedom is respected. Umar stated that Indonesia's diversity is a unifying strength rather than a threat to national integrity, noting that the country's multiculturalism is maintained through the harmony between prophetic values and national consensus, specifically Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.
