Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture issues 889 plant variety protection certificates

Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture has issued a total of 889 Plant Variety Protection (PVT) certificates since 2007. As of August 2026, the ministry issued 63 certificates between January and August, with 15 issued specifically in August.

Leli Nuryati, Head of the Center for Plant Variety Protection and Agricultural Licensing (PVTPP), stated that providing adaptive, high-quality seeds is essential to facing agricultural challenges and accelerating sustainable national food self-sufficiency. The PVT system ensures the novelty, uniqueness, stability, and uniformity of varieties, which are monitored regularly to maintain quality.

Of the 889 certified varieties, 87 are rice varieties. In 2026, one rice variety submitted by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) received certification. The initiative aims to support modern agricultural programs by providing high-productivity seeds that increase farming efficiency and competitiveness.
