Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and MUI launch ecological repentance movement

The Indonesian Ministry of Environment (KLH) and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) have launched the ‘Ecological Repentance’ movement to address the nation's environmental crisis. This initiative aims to supplement formal regulations and law enforcement with moral and spiritual awareness.

Minister of Environment Jumhur Hidayat stated that addressing environmental damage requires a shift in public behavior driven by religious values. The movement is structured around three core steps: acknowledging mistakes made against nature, committing to stop destructive practices, and actively restoring damaged ecosystems.

At the individual level, the movement encourages citizens to change daily habits, such as reducing energy waste and proper waste disposal. The government also plans to strengthen regulations and oversight, ensuring that violators face consequences ranging from administrative warnings to legal action.
