Indonesia's Ministry of Law Expands IP Support for Creators and Prepares AI Copyright Rules

The regional office of Indonesia's Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Central Sulawesi is intensifying assistance for intellectual‑property protection of the creative economy. Officials, led by regional head Rakhmat Renaldy, are educating artisans such as rattan craft maker Kamardin in Palu on registering industrial designs to safeguard designs from unauthorised copying and to add market value.

At the national level, the government is drafting revisions to the Copyright Act to address the rise of generative AI. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria said the changes aim to protect creators’ economic rights while allowing AI development to continue. The revision will involve consultations with stakeholders across the digital media, publishing, music, film and technology sectors, and will be coordinated with the Ministry of Law.

Both initiatives seek to strengthen legal certainty for creators, boost the competitiveness of Indonesia’s creative products, and ensure that new technologies operate within a balanced regulatory framework.
